We Are Ambassadors of God: What Does It Mean?

We Are Ambassadors of God: What Does It Mean?

2 Corinthians 5:20 in the NKJV states, 'Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.' In another version, The Message (MSG), the same scripture eloquently explains, 'We're Christ's representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God's work of making things right between them. We're speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he's already a friend with you.' This verse emphasizes that believers serve as ambassadors for Christ, conveying His message of reconciliation to the world and urging others to reconcile with God through faith in Christ.
Today, we will explore the concept of being Ambassadors of God, which entails representing God. Being ambassadors of God means representing the kingdom of God. Let's begin by delving into what the Scriptures reveal about the kingdom of God.
"Then He said, 'To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade (Mark 4:30-32).' Another similar scripture states, 'What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the wild birds found shelter and roosted and nested in its branches (Luke 13:18-19).
The passages we've just explored illustrate that within God's earthly kingdom, believers can be compared to a mustard seed sown in the ground. This analogy closely mirrors the parable found in Matthew 13:3-9, where Jesus, the sower, scatters seeds into the ground, resulting in a variety of outcomes—some seeds perish, while others thrive and produce varying levels of crops, whether a hundredfold, sixtyfold, or thirtyfold. Similarly, as we continue to grow and mature in our faith, we become like trees in the world, offering refuge and solace to those in search of shelter, much like birds finding sanctuary in our branches. These 'birds' symbolize the individuals we connect with and share the message of God's kingdom, some of whom discover comfort and solace in the message we impart.
The true righteousness of God that we embody cannot be hidden; it shines brightly wherever we go. Just as darkness cannot overpower light, the light of God's truth and love always prevails over darkness. These "birds" are in search of rest, and ultimately, that rest is found in Jesus Christ. The kingdom of God isn't solely focused on prosperity; its primary aim is to cultivate a culture of righteous living. This righteousness leads to a harmonious life filled with peace and joy, all facilitated by the Holy Spirit. As Scripture reminds us, "For the kingdom of God is not about eating and drinking, but about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17).
As believers in Christ, we serve as Ambassadors of the Kingdom of God, and true sons of God are led by the Holy Spirit, as stated in Romans 8:14. We manifest the culture of the Kingdom by practicing righteousness, and our mission is to convey and exemplify the message of the Kingdom of God. Jesus sacrificed Himself so that the world can find salvation through faith in Him and be reconciled to God, as affirmed in John 3:16 and 2 Corinthians 5:18. As ambassadors, our responsibility is the ministry of reconciliation, and we must strive to emulate Christ, as advised in 1 Corinthians 11:1.
Furthermore, it is essential to prepare for this calling, equipping ourselves to effectively minister to the world. This preparation aligns with the scriptural guidance found in 2 Timothy 2:15, which encourages us to be diligent in presenting ourselves approved to God as workers who have no need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of truth. Our misrepresentation can lead unbelievers to overlook the Kingdom of God, and it's crucial for us to be mindful of this.
In conclusion, it's essential to grasp the understanding that you represent God's kingdom when you proclaim yourself as a believer. Act accordingly. Always remember that it's the Holy Spirit who leads, guides, and transforms you. While you may not be perfect, you are made righteous in Christ, and that's what matters most. Embrace your role as an ambassador of God's kingdom and represent it with excellence!
