The Reality of Generational Curses, Part 4: The Real Work in Breaking Evil Covenants and Maintaining Your Deliverance
Welcome back! How has your journey been with identifying and breaking the evil patterns and covenants? Feel free to share your experience in the comments or send me an email. We're here to support and pray for one another!
In this post, we’ll discuss what to expect when breaking evil covenants, the steps involved, the specific prayers to use, and how to maintain your deliverance. With that said, let’s dive in!
The first thing to expect when breaking an evil covenant is a surge of intense and often strange dreams. These might include common patterns such as sexual dreams, sleep paralysis, eating or drinking in the dream, being chased by people or animals, falling or flying, being shot or stabbed, fighting, frequently dreaming about snakes, finding yourself in a pit or cage, waking up with marks on your body, smelling alcohol, cigars, or sometimes sulfur, seeing deceased relatives, or having certain family members appear more often in your dreams. Some of these dreams may be bizarre or even horrific.
This is normal, as breaking an evil covenant draws the attention of these spirits. The altars will fight back, and these spirits will try to defend their territory by attempting to undo your efforts and reestablish the covenant. This happens in two ways: they may seduce you in your dreams to reestablish the covenant, hoping you're unaware of spiritual laws, or they will attempt to intimidate you by instilling fear to secure a stronger covenant.
When I first began to understand evil covenants, my dreams took a drastic turn. Even before that, my dreams were terrifying, as I had been engaging in spiritual warfare without fully grasping the rules of engagement. I was fighting demons that had legal rights over me due to ancestral covenants and evil covenants I had unknowingly entered into. This led to intense spiritual attacks, which also manifested in my physical life. By the grace of God, I didn’t lose my mind, but I came to dread sleep, day or night. On a good night, I was lucky to get even two hours of peaceful rest. I endured this for almost two years.
However, when I began breaking evil covenants and destroying altars, as I mentioned earlier, my dreams took a drastic shift. I started standing up to these spirits, and my dreams became more vivid, allowing me to recognize the symbols needed to confront them. As my understanding deepened, the spiritual warfare intensified. I even began forgetting my dreams, but I would still wake up and immediately cancel any evil covenants I may have entered into or reinstated. I also continued fasting during this period. If my dreams seemed strange or I could only remember fragments of them, I would resume fasting if I wasn’t already.
I highly recommend listening to Kevin L.A Ewing. He is an expert in dreams and breaking evil covenants, and he offers a wealth of free resources to guide you on your journey.
These experiences are a sign that the covenants are breaking and their legal hold over you is weakening. You must continue the spiritual warfare until you see changes in your physical life. Be persistent and resilient, because things may get worse before they get better. However, the truth is, these issues were always there, just waiting for the right season to manifest in your life. Stay strong and press on!
When breaking evil covenants and maintaining your deliverance, it's essential to be fully committed to living for Christ. This deliverance will lead to a transformation in your life, so taking your faith seriously is key to sustaining the freedom you receive.
For true and lasting deliverance, Jesus must be Lord over every area of your life. You can't afford to leave any doors open for the enemy to re-enter and attack. Matthew 12:43-45 gives us a powerful warning about what happens when an unclean spirit leaves a person. It wanders through barren places seeking rest but finds none. When it returns to the person it left and finds their life—like a house—empty, clean, but unoccupied, it brings seven more wicked spirits with it. As a result, the person’s condition becomes far worse than before. This passage clearly shows the danger of not filling your life with righteousness after deliverance. If you remain spiritually empty without committing to God, you invite even greater evil to return. Filling your life with God’s truth and presence is the only way to secure your freedom.
To fill your life with righteousness, the first step is to submit to God and ask the Holy Spirit for help. You need to build a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of God, the Spirit of truth—because He is your ultimate Helper. Next, put on the whole armor of God, which embodies the fullness of righteousness, protecting and guiding you in your walk with Christ. For a complete understanding of the whole armor of God, be sure to read my post titled "The Whole Armor of God." It provides an in-depth explanation of each part and its significance.
I want us to read and discuss this scripture together: Ephesians 6:11-13.
11 "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."
So, why are we instructed to put on the whole armor of God? It is to ensure our protection because we are truly fighting against spirits of various hierarchies and rankings. The armor shields us from these spiritual forces. The spiritual realm operates with precision and strict legality; when we violate its laws, these forces gain a foothold to attack God's plans and will.
God's will is carried out through us on Earth because we are made in His image and have been given dominion to manifest His will here. This is the real reason they fight us through adversity—to distract us from fulfilling God's purpose.
Your deliverance is closely tied to your purpose, which is why the devil fights to keep you in bondage to prevent you from realizing this truth. Bondage and generational curses serve as distractions from fulfilling your purpose. The gift of righteousness gives us the boldness to approach God, granting us direct access to Him. Through the death of Jesus, everyone has the same access to God.
When you begin to wear the whole armor of God daily, a transformation takes place because you're actively living out these principles:
- The helmet of salvation
- The belt of truth
- The breastplate of righteousness
- The shield of faith
- The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God
- The shoes of the gospel of peace
This transformation allows you to submit and align your will with God’s. In this process, your purpose becomes clearer. As you grow in understanding of God’s will, your focus shifts from yourself to fulfilling His plan. As you walk in God's will, His promises and blessings will gradually unfold in your life. This transformation won’t happen overnight. God, in His perfect timing, will teach you how to serve Him through your unique purpose.
Each of our journeys is different. For some, our hearts may be so hardened that God must break down our walls to show us His unmatched power and presence. He doesn’t force us to surrender; He wants us to choose to give ourselves fully to Him. When we do, He cares for us like a devoted Father. If you're fortunate enough to experience His divine revelation, you’ll find yourself not only pursuing Him but pleading for Him to be your God. You’ll begin to understand David’s prayers in the book of Psalms, his deep love for God, and why God blessed him so richly.
Now is the moment to make that choice—surrender fully to Him, and watch as He not only delivers you but transforms your life in ways you never imagined. Trust in His power, and let Him guide you toward the freedom and purpose He has in store for you.
When breaking an evil covenant, a specific type of prayer to pray involves consistently renouncing and breaking these covenants, along with daily repentance. In fact, I recommend doing this after every sleep. I say every day because we live in a wicked world, and you never know what traps may have been set to secure a covenant. It could be something as simple as eating food from someone you don’t realize is involved in witchcraft, being in the wrong place and getting defiled, or participating in an event that subtly serves as a ritual for the devil.
One important point to note is that if you knowingly or unknowingly forge an evil covenant during your waking hours, it will manifest in your dreams. If someone is working witchcraft against you, they may appear in your dreams, even if you don't fully understand the symbols. Their presence is often an attempt to establish a covenant. Upon waking, it is crucial to cancel any dreams that are not from God and align yourself with the ones that are. You can pray like this:
“Father, if my dreams from this sleep are from You, I come into agreement with Your will. But if they are from the devil, I renounce and break all evil covenants I may have formed, and I repent of any sin that may have opened the door.”
If the Holy Spirit reveals specific symbols in your dreams, it’s important to address those spirits directly in prayer. For example, if you dream of your deceased mother, who died of cancer, feeding you or offering you food, and there’s a pattern of cancer-related deaths in your bloodline, this dream reveals a spirit of infirmity—specifically cancer and death—attempting to forge or reinstate a covenant with you.
In such cases, you should pray like this:
“You spirits of infirmity (cancer) and death, I rebuke you and cancel any agreement with you in the name of Jesus. Every sin I, my ancestors, or anyone connected to my bloodline have committed, Lord, please forgive us—I repent. I bind and cast you to the abyss or wherever the Lord Jesus sends you, by the authority I have in Jesus' name. Any altar that has been raised to bring the spirit of infirmity and death into my life, Father, let Your fire rain upon this altar and utterly consume it in Jesus’ name. Any man or woman servicing this altar, let their works be destroyed, let confusion fall upon them, and cause them to flee in seven different directions, in the mighty name of Jesus.”
This type of prayer directly addresses the spirits revealed in the dream, breaking their power and restoring your spiritual authority. Sometimes, the Holy Spirit may even lead you to fast immediately. It's important to follow His guidance closely. This is why having a strong relationship with the Holy Spirit is essential—He will lead you. He might prompt you to avoid certain people, stay away from specific places, or change your direction altogether. Stay sensitive to His leading in every aspect of your life.
When consistently renouncing and breaking evil covenants, it’s important to replace them with God's promises. For example, you can pray:
"I renounce and cancel every evil covenant (name the spirit by its pattern). Your word says, 'A curse without a cause cannot align' (Proverbs 26:2b). Therefore, you no longer have a legal right to operate in my life. In the authority I have through Christ Jesus, I command you to leave my life now! For your word says, 'Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted shall be uprooted' (Matthew 15:13). I sever your hold on my destiny and purpose in the name of Jesus. Your word also says, 'You will decree a thing, and it will be established' (Job 22:28). I stand on the authority I have in Christ and decree that all my divine blessings locked up in the kingdom of darkness be released now. Your word declares, 'Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us and establish the work of our hands' (Psalm 90:17). Establish the work of my hands, Lord."....
As you continue to pray, include other scriptures that apply to your situation. For more guidance, I recommend using the prayers in my post, "Prayer to Break Evil Covenants", to help tailor your own prayer.
When you live righteously—applying the full armor of God, constantly repenting, and keeping all doors closed to the enemy through the help of the Holy Spirit—any attempts of witchcraft against you will not succeed. However, what the enemy will try to do is lead you into iniquity, so that their attacks can be effective. Iniquity refers to unrepentant sin, and as we know, the wages of sin is death. There are serious consequences for living in unrepentant sin.
Let’s turn to the Bible to illustrate this point. In Numbers chapter, 23 and 24, Balaam raised an altar to curse the children of Israel, but instead, God blessed them because they were living righteously. But in chapter 25, when the Israelites began to go against God's ordinances, the curse came upon them powerfully. This shows that living righteously is the key to staying protected from spiritual attacks.
Generational curses result from iniquities passed down from our ancestors, and they definitely create open doors for spiritual attack. The spirits involved in these curses work to keep you in iniquity, ensuring they maintain a legal right to afflict you. Demons or evil spirits cannot simply attack or afflict someone without a legal right—a curse or covenant must be in place for them to operate. Remember, the enemy’s goal is to distract you from your true purpose, which is to fulfill God’s will for your life.
The final step in maintaining your deliverance is immersing yourself in the Word of God as if your very life depends on it and praying without ceasing. Prayer is your lifeline. Dive deep into the Bible to know God intimately and protect yourself from deception.
Knowledge of God is meant to be experiential—are you truly experiencing God through His Word, or just knowing it? Studying His Word and living by it is the first step to truly experiencing God. As you encounter Him personally through His truth, your faith is strengthened, empowering you to trust and rely on Him more deeply.
And most importantly—pray! Keep praying! Prayer is your most powerful weapon in spiritual warfare. I can’t stress this enough—PRAY like your life depends on it! To strengthen your prayer life and gain a deeper understanding of prayer, I encourage you to read the following blog posts:
